comments: I am trying to make contact with a former 4-H member who visited us ( The Briceno Family, Punta Gorda,Belize ). This visit was done in June/July 1976 and we were the host family. We communicated by mail for a few years and then stopped. The 4-H student name was Theresa Hayes and may be married by now and may have even moved from this address (6743 Hickory Pt.Dr. 49002) Her parents may still be living at the same address. I believe she had a sister whose name I do not remember and a brother named Todd. She was in high school at that time. I have always wondered the following: Across the street from Hardings Market at Oakland Drive and Parkview Ave was a pizza resturant. Behind the resturant was where the people of the Oakwood neighborhood could go swimming, but it was in ruins when I lived in Oakwood. Did it ever get cleaned up?
In addition, what churches went into the old Oakwood Methodist Church next to Hardings Market, and the old Oakwood Bible Church on Amerherst? I belonged to the Boy Scout troop that was sponsered by the Methodist Church.
I attended Oakwood Elementary. I heard the school was being closed down. What has been done to the building and the property?

comments: I have just recently inherited some photos (amoung other stuff) and am trying to locate & give these photos back to where they may have originated. Was there an E.R. High School around in 1920 & 1921 ???? What I have is 2 old mounted photos of the "E.R.H.S. 20-21" basketball teams. 1 is the boys team & 1 is the girls team. "E.R.S.H. 20-21" is painted on the basketball. I do not know if these pictures belong to a high school in Michigan or to a high school in Illinois.
The photos belonged to Norwegians. Here is the story. In the late 1800's, or very early 1900's, Mr. Johan Telstad (aka John Telstad in American & Johan Tilstad in Norway), along with his wife Marit Telstad (or Merit, or Maret - maiden name Saetherbo in Norway, changed to Seterbo in American), came to the USA. With them they brought their 1st daughter Marie Telstad (Marie Tilstad in Norway). I believe they first settled in either the Evanston, Illinois area or the Traverse City/Suttons Bay, Michigan area. In the early 1900's, their 2nd daughter was born. Her name was Eda Telstad (Ida Tilstad in Norwegian). Anyways, by the time Eda reached age 14, both their parents had passed away. Marie, Eda's older sister, was granted guardianship of Eda. Then in the early 1910's or 1920's, Marie had her cousin come from Norway, to the USA. His name was Magnus Saetherbo in Norwegian. Changed to Magnus Seterbo in America. Magnus, Marie, and Eda never married & never had children. So there was no family heirs. From what I can figure out by searching through the boxes full of stuff, Eda went to school in Evanston, Illinois to become a teacher. I believe that she taught school in Kalamazoo, Michigan for a few years. Magnus always lived with Marie & Eda. They owned homes in Kalamazoo & in Suttons Bay. Eda passed ways first, while she was a teacher in Kalamazoo. 10 years later, Marie passed away. Magnus saved his cousins belongings and memories.
My father, also a Norwegian (son of Theodore Anderson & Rachel Anderson - maiden name Setterbo) still lives in Suttons Bay & he knew Marie, Eda, and Magnus. I met Magnus when he as an older man & I was young. Before Eda & Marie died, they were friends of my Grandmother Rachel's sisters (Louise Setterbo). Louise Setterbo married Leslie Dobson & they lived in Suttons Bay. Magnus remained friends with Louise throughout all the years. I can't recall offhand when Magnus died. But when he did, Magnus, Marie, and Eda's things went into storage at Louise Dobson's house. Louise Dobson just died a couple months ago. Her children gave the boxes of Magnus, Marie, and Eda's things to my Dad. My Dad picked out a few things & gave all the rest to me.
Amoungst all the photos are these (2) E.R.H.S. 20-21 basketball team portraits. They are not exactly what I would call black & white. They are actually shades of brown. And they are quite clear in detail. 85 years later, it would be nice to see them hang on the hallway wall, back into the school in which they came. But I have not been able to figure out what the E.R. (in ERHS) stands for, so I do not know which school these came from. In the boys team photo there is 9 boys & 1 adult male coach. In the girls team photo there is 8 girls & 1 adult female coach. One of the girls resembles Eda Telstad, but I am not sure if it is her or not. Was your high school around in 1920? Do you have a record of an Eda Telstad attending your high school?

comments: I am currently in the Navy but will be getting out and moving back to the Kalamazoo area within the next 3 months. I am interested in finding a position as a firefighter/E.M.T when I get back there. I have training throught the navy in firefighting but no certifications necessary to become one in the civilian world. I was wondering what steps were necessary to become a Kalamazoo firefighter...whether it is just a volunteer position or a fulltime paid position. comments: My late mother, Marie Motter Palmer (born Marie Adeline Motter), 1911-2004, was born in Kalamazoo. I believe her parents, my grandparents, were also locals. They were Laura Edith Rowson (1883-1974) and Ralph Daniel Motter (188?-1952). My granparents moved to Pittsburgh, my birthpalce, when Mother and her sister, Arline Motter Lewis (1908-1990)were small, 1920 or before. I know virtually nothing of the Motters, but know Grandma's mother died when she was four and she was raised by her grandmother, Grandma Geiser, on a farm probably in the area. I believe the farm was taken over by her cousins, Nev and Beth, but though I have their picture and a strong memory of their bright yellow farmhouse, I don't know their last names. I do know the family names were Geiser, Motter, Rowson, Snyder, and (I think) Balsch. Grandma's father was Welsh and immigrated at age 12 to work in a coal mine.
I am an only child, unmarried, 56. I have no one left to ask for family information. If anyone knows anything of any of these people, I would appreciate a reply.
